F.A.Q.

Q: I'm finishing up my undergraduate degree and interesting in pursuing a PhD in your group. Do you have openings? A: I get a lot of enquiries from prospective students and I cannot reply to them all, so please don't take lack of response as negative feedback. I want to encourage prospective graduate students to apply to UCSB through the normal channels and rest assured that your application materials are being read carefully by the admissions committee. There are always interesting science projects to pursue and I do take on new students from the pool of applicants regularly. However, I cannot take on an unlimited number of students in the interest of time management and maintaining close mentorship of everyone in my group.

Q: Are you hiring postdocs now? A: If there's a job ad up (or recently up) on the AAS job register, then yes. Otherwise, probably not. If not but you feel there's a strong match between our research goals and some way to support your research at UCSB financially then get in touch.

Q: I'm interested in applying to bring a postdoc fellowship to UCSB to work with you. May I? A: Yes, please get in touch, the earlier the better.

Q: I'm a PhD student at another university and interested in visiting your group for a while as part of my PhD. May I? A: I've really enjoyed having some visiting PhD students join my group for a few months at a time, and often this is built in to their PhD requirements at their home universities. If you are interested in pursuing such an arrangement then discuss it with your supervisor and reach out jointly and we can discuss arrangements. It may not be possible depending on the timing, but if the match is good I'll try to facilitate it as best I can.

Q: I'm a UCSB undergrad interested in pursuing research with you. Do you have openings in your group? A: Thanks for your interest! I nominally request that undergrads interested in working with me apply through the UCSB Physics undergraduate research application form in the winter quarter.
